Classes during Work Hours

The KZN Language Institute offers a range of programmes to meet the needs of any student. The full-time programmes are for students who want to develop proficiency in English or to move from general proficiency to academic proficiency.  Intensive English classes are held daily, Monday to Friday, for three-hour sessions of integrated skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing). It is expected that the students work for at least a further two to three hours daily on their own consolidation of lessons. Virtual lessons are also available.

With the rise of COVID-19, we have innovated our delivery of lessons and now teach language in a virtual classroom, using Zoom as a platform. The course is called Improve your English via Zoom, with lessons held once a week.

This programme is designed for complete beginners in English. We use an interactive approach to develop competency in the skills of speaking, listening, and to introduce basic reading and writing for Beginner English.

Students develop confidence in small, relaxed groups. Students attend daily classes (from Monday to Friday) for 60 hours a month. We recommend at least three months. Contact hours are from 8.30am to 12 noon and students are expected to spend a further two to three hours on revision and practice after class each day.

COST: R4 500 for 60 hours per month (3 hours per day)

This course is designed for students with a basic ability to communicate in English. There is a simple placement test to ascertain their level of proficiency. We use an interactive approach to develop competency in the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

If students attain an appropriate degree of proficiency in this level they are then able to move into the pre-intermediate course, which is the next level. A firm foundation is essential to enable students to proceed to higher levels.

This course develops the proficiency required for entry into our academic English programme or for admission into undergraduate studies at a higher education institute. There is a simple placement test to ascertain a student’s level of proficiency. The focus at this level is more on reading and writing skills. However, students also develop and practise the skills of giving presentations, taking notes, and participating in discussions. Students attend daily classes (from Monday to Friday) for a total of 60 hours per month with three months of tuition recommended.

COST: R4 500 for 60 hours per month (3 hours per day)

This course is for students who have achieved the minimum proficiency required for admission into an academic programme at a higher education institution (university). It builds on their English language skills within an academic context, focusing on effective reading and writing, the development of skills for listening and note-taking, participating in discussions and giving presentations. It provides students with greater confidence to succeed at university.

Life has changed.  Learning has changed.

Recently a teacher requested: “I’m an HOD, I went to an English as Second Language school. My English command is not good and I’m not confident when speaking English.  I have many challenges.”

Does this sound like you?  It is a plea that we at the KLI hear a lot. And now we want to address it in a new way.  Do you have Zoom?  (If not, it’s easy to download the application on your computer or smartphone.) Can you join us for a virtual class once a week online? There are admirable people out there teaching children and meeting needs. Yet they themselves feel the need for support and improvement in English.

TIME: Wednesdays, 3–5pm, starting in July.

DURATION: Four months, four lessons per month

COST: All that is required is that you commit to being online once a week and you pay the fee of R800 per month, at the start of each month.

The teacher is qualified to teach correct language structure and usage, and all the skills for addressing groups face to face or in writing.

When you feel confident, you are confident. Skills in language usage in the English setup can be learned and can be passed on.

Space is limited, so advanced booking and payment is essential. Please note that course dates may change as a result.
