After Hours Courses

These programmes are offered on a weekly basis and usually take place on one or two evenings per week or on a Saturday morning. They are for people who would like a basic understanding of communication in another language and/or for a specific purpose. Anyone can take such programmes – there is no prior qualification required. These programmes are generally either 20 or 40 hours long, lasting between 7 and 13 weeks in total. All our courses can be offered on site should this be required.

    This evening course is designed for non-speakers of the language who need not have prior knowledge of isiZulu. Learners will acquire a sufficient vocabulary base which will enable them to conduct simple conversation in isiZulu. Issues which are culturally relevant will be introduced to facilitate communication and understanding amongst our peoples.

    DURATION: Normally 13 weeks every Monday from 5:15 pm – 8:15pm (40 hours). Special course: Fridays from 10:30am to 1:30pm from 23rd August to 15 November 2019

This evening course is designed for non-speakers of the language who do not need to have prior knowledge of kiSwahili. Learners will acquire a sufficient vocabulary base which will enable them to conduct simple conversation in kiSwahili. Issues which are culturally relevant will be introduced to facilitate communication and better understanding.

DURATION: A total of 40 hours on most Tuesday and Thursday evenings over a 13 week period from 5:15pm 8:15pm

OPTIONAL EXTRA: Weekend immersion with Swahili-speaking Host Family in Pietermaritzburg is offered on selected Saturdays and Sundays from 4pm to 7pm. Added cost: R300 each per session. The course is limited to 12 delegates so advanced booking and payment is essential. The KLI reserves the right not to run the course on these dates should fewer than 10 students register. This course will be offered again.

This Saturday morning course is designed for anyone wanting to improve their communication skills with the deaf. Learners will acquire a sufficient vocabulary base which will enable them to conduct simple conversation in sign language.

This Saturday morning course is designed to help you improve your English, especially your use of formal English. You will build self-confidence and be able to confidently communicate your abilities and service. Our flexible classes deal with specific needs as we actively engage to solve problems experienced in day-to-day communication. Through regular, real-time class practice you will learn to correct and avoid typical language errors.

DURATION: Every Saturday for 7 weeks, 09:00am sharp – 12:30pm (20 hours in total)

COST: R950 per person per month, payable strictly before the course commences. The course is 4-months in duration, but new students can be accommodated at the start of a month. Limited to 12 delegates, so advanced booking and payment is essential. This course will be run again during the second half of the year.

This course is designed for non-speakers of the language, aimed at A1/1 level, and will afford learners the opportunity of starting an additional subject for school (which might lead, with further stages of competence added, to a good overall matric result), in enhancing studies at a tertiary institution (e.g. in commerce, technology, tourism, etc.), or developing an extra skill for career purposes (in South Africa or one of the German speaking countries). Others who could benefit are those emigrating to a German speaking country and applicants for positions in German speaking countries (e.g. trainees, au-pairs). Basic German language skills may be a requirement which this course, possibly with an added A1/2 level course, could fulfil.
