Do you need greater confidence and skill, when using English for professional purposes? The next Professional English course starts SAT 31 May 2014. It is run over seven Saturday mornings at the KZN Language Institute, ending SAT 12 JULy 2014. The cost for the full 20 hour certificate course is R1200.

This course is designed to help you with your writing and communication skills in the business world, using the English language which is the predominant language of business universally. Although many people in South Africa are very capable of speaking English, quite often the formal skills of language are lacking, especially when it comes to writing.
The introduction to the course is the basis on which we will build, so it is important to get this foundation right. We will look at what communication is, where the English language comes from (and why it’s so difficult!), the differences between formal and informal language and between written and spoken language, and the differences between writing for different purposes (“writing genres”). Please note that this is not “English at school”!

Instruction will be given in the formal aspects of writing connected with business meetings, such as agendas and minutes, and the duties of the various personnel involved. An emphasis will be put on Report writing, which is a neglected part of business communication. Writing a clear report is an enormous aid to business communication. Other types of writing will also be covered of course.
There will be a number of writing exercises which your instructor will be assessing and giving you feed-back on. Most of these will be on a “write – rewrite “ basis, as this is the best way of learning to write formally. Some of the writing you will be doing at home between classes. This is not strictly a language or grammar course, but with feedback and rewriting, a great deal of language issues will be covered according to individual needs.

By the end of the course , you should be able to write confidently in English for all business purposes, as well as being conversant with the formal structures of business communication.
A certificate of completion is issued to trainees who complete all aspects of the course.
